Your skin is affected by abstaining from sex or self-pleasure!

Have you gone a long time without sex or masturbation? Careful... it shows!

The effects of abstaining from sex (or rather, orgasm) on the body

Sometimes the skin can say a great deal too. That is why we should care for it as well as possible and, above all, learn to understand its language.

As a tantra massage practitioner for women, an expert in Ayurveda and Ayurvedic constitutions (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), I noticed straight away that a woman's sexual health is very closely linked to the appearance and health of her skin.

Sexual abstinence: how it shows on your skin

Consider a few examples: the first lockdown in March, April and May 2020, or being single for a long time, or having little or very little sex. Add to this the possibility that you do not practise self-pleasure.

So abstaining from sex or going a long time without intimate contact with a partner or yourself can be very frustrating, as we know. But that is not all. Three sex therapists and psychologists have explained the consequences of a long period without sexual contact.

Your skin reveals a lack of sex

Sex is wonderful, and so is self-pleasure, even more so when you reach orgasm. Experts say it counts as physical exercise and is also beneficial for the skin.

Sex makes the skin glow and appear healthy and alive! Conversely, if you go a long time without intimate activity (not even masturbation), the skin loses its radiance and the natural glow effect.

According to Melissa Piliang, dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, and Ted Lain, physician at Sanova Dermatology: “Like other forms of exercise, sex increases blood flow to the skin, giving you a brighter complexion.” The reason is greater blood flow, which “provides an increased supply of oxygen to the skin”.

Sex, cortisol and collagen

Sex and masturbation have excellent benefits for both skin and stress. Lain says that having sex reduces cortisol levels, the stress hormone, improving collagen production. Collagen is the protein that helps maintain our supple, smooth skin; however, high cortisol levels can physically damage collagen irreparably, leaving the skin with scars or wrinkles.

Dr Piliang states that increased estrogen levels during sex help to 'plump up' collagen, so even if you are a little stressed, there is no need to worry. Finally, Dr. Lain says that regulating the hormones oxytocin, prolactin and oestrogen helps prevent unwanted flare-ups of menstrual acne.

The benefits of sex and orgasm for the rest of the body

According to Dr. Rachel Needle, psychologist and co-director of the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes, having sex:

  • helps you sleep better
  • reduce pain
  • reducing stress
  • keeping anxiety and depression under control
  • much more besides...

The importance of orgasm in sex and masturbation

Needle said these benefits are so important that people unable to have sexual intercourse should still masturbate and have orgasms. The reason is that, through orgasm, the body releases endorphins that reduce stress, at least temporarily.
